Cookies and local storage
Four categories, one of which you can switch off without changing anything about how the site works. No advertising trackers, because there are no ads.

What this covers
Cookies are small files a site stores in your browser. This page also covers the other browser storage the site uses — local storage and similar mechanisms — because from your point of view they do the same job and deserve the same explanation.
Some of what is stored comes from us. Some comes from third parties whose services are embedded in the page. Both are described below.
What is stored, and why
- Essential
- Keeps the service working: your session, your signed-in state if you have an account, security and abuse protection, and the load-balancing that gets you to a working server. These cannot be switched off without breaking the site.
- Preferences
- Remembers choices you made so you are not asked twice — for example an age confirmation, or a setting you changed. Small, and local to your browser.
- Offline and install
- The site can be added to a phone home screen. That uses a service worker plus local caching so it opens quickly and survives a bad connection.
- Analytics
- Measures how the product is used in aggregate — which pages get opened, which features get used, where visits come from. We use Google Analytics 4 for this. It tells us that a page was viewed, not who you are.
There is no advertising or cross-site tracking category here, because the site does not run ads and does not carry advertising trackers.
Third parties
Third-party services embedded in the site set their own storage under their own policies:
- Google Analytics — usage measurement, governed by Google's privacy terms.
- Payment providers — only if you make a purchase, and only for that transaction.
- Sign-in providers — only if you choose to sign in with an external account.
We do not control how those companies handle what they collect. Their policies apply to it, not ours.
How to turn it off
Every browser lets you view, block and delete cookies and site data, usually under privacy or site settings. You can clear what this site has stored the same way you would for any other.
Two things worth knowing before you do. Blocking essential storage will break sign-in and the call itself — that is not a design choice, it is what those items are for. And blocking analytics only affects measurement; nothing about your experience of the site changes.
Google publishes a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics across every site that uses it, if you would rather handle it once instead of per-site.
Changes
If we add or remove a category, this page changes with it and the effective date at the top moves. The privacy policy covers everything else about how information is handled.
